Names of Jesus - Day 15

Emmanuel: God with us
Matthew 1:23

There are many hymns and/or Christmas carols that use the name "Emmanuel". We'll sing a few of them.

O Come, O Come Emmanuel
Emmanuel (His Name is Called Emmanuel)
Hark the Herald Angels Sing

Names of Jesus - Day 14

The Prince of Peace
Isaiah 9:6 (read but not copied)

Copy Luke 2:14

One symbol of peace is a dove. Draw a dove in your notebook.

Names of Jesus - Day 13

I'm going to go ahead and post the rest of the names for fear that I will forget and it won't get done.

The Everlasting Father
Isaiah 9:6 (read but not copied)

Talk about what makes a good father. Talk about Father Abraham.

Talk about the meaning of a wreath. It is circular, having no beginning or ending - it's eternal. Evergreens symbolize eternal life because they are green all year 'round.

Experiment for everlasting - get a piece of hard candy and suck on it. See how long it lasts in comparison to the word "everlasting".

Names of Jesus - Day 12

The Mighty God
Isaiah 9:6 (read but not copied again)

The boys wrote in their Bible journals what words or pictures they think of when they hear the word "mighty". We read Jer. 32:17-18 and I asked them what song that reminded them of (Ah, Lord God).

They each took guesses as to how many times the word "mighty" is used in the Bible. Then we used a concordance to see who was closest. We did the same with "almighty" and they wanted to do another, so we did "strength."

Names of Jesus - Day 11

Wonderful Counselor
Isaiah 9:6 (copied for the next 4 names)

Talked about what a counselor is and does. Did an experiment - I blindfolded one of the boys and had the other "counsel" him from the dining room to his room (giving verbal directions only). Then they switched. Then we talked about how easy/hard it was to give counsel and how easy/hard it was to take counsel (how easy/hard it was to trust someone else's direction.) We know that the best counsel we can receive is from God (through the Bible, prayer and other Christians.)

Names of Jesus - Day 10

Jesus
Luke 2:21

Talk about Philippians 2:9-11, how powerful the name of Jesus is. Jesus is the most popular name in history, he is mocked and worshipped. But one day, every knee will bow at the name of Jesus.

Listen to the song "Come, Thou Long-Expected Jesus".

Names of Jesus - Day 9

Lily of the Valley
There was no specific verse copied for this one.

We read Matthew 6:28-29 and talked about how the lilies are more beautiful than Solomon - the richest man and king - when he was dressed in his royal robes, jewelry, crown, etc. The boys were to write why they think Lily of the Valley is a good name for Jesus.

We also discussed how Lily of the Valley is generally white and the significance of the color white when referring to Jesus.

Names of Jesus - Day 8

Lamb of God
John 1:29

In the story of Abraham and Isaac, a ram was provided as a substitute offering so that Isaac didn't have to die. In the same way, Jesus was provided as a substitute offering so that we can live. Jesus is the lamb that was provided as the sacrifice to take away our sins. Now we no longer have to provide a sacrifice at the temple to pay for our sins. Jesus paid it all.

The boys turned their papers upside down and traced their hands. Turn the paper right side up and use the 4 fingers as the sheep's legs and the thumb for his head. They drew curly wool, eyes, nose, mouth and ears to remind us of the lamb.

Names of Jesus - Day 7

Light of the World
John 8:12

We talked about how when you are in the darkest of all places with absolutely no light, even the faintest little light allows us to see. Our world is the darkest of dark because of the sin and even though we are only one person, we can shine so people can see. When many Christians get together and shine, there's even more light.

The boys wrote a poem about light.

Names of Jesus - Day 6

King
Zachariah 9:9

List what makes a good king. Some responses we came up with were - kind, powerful, leader...

Names of Jesus - Day 5

My apologies for getting behind on this. I'll try to catch us up today.

Savior

John 4:42

Respond to this statement: "If there wasn't an Easter, there wouldn't be a Christmas."
Most of us think the other way around - if Jesus hadn't been born, he wouldn't have died on the cross for our sins. But the Savior that he was was born on Christmas so that he could die for us. That's the whole purpose of his coming. If Jesus hadn't become our Savior through his death, there would be no reason to celebrate his coming (his birth.)

The boys did a good job thinking this through and writing their own responses.

Names of Jesus - Day 4

Friend - Matthew 11:19

What qualities make someone a good friend? Research has shown loneliness (and other negative emotions) can be harmful to your health. We need friends! Jesus was a friend to everyone regardless of social or economic status.

Names of Jesus - Day 3

Holy One - Mark 1:24

Even the demons knew who Jesus was! Looked up and copied the definition of "holy" in our notebooks. Talked about the Holy Land.

Names of Jesus - Day 2

The Good Shepherd
Like the Alpha and Omega, the Good Shepherd is also a self-given name of Jesus. Jesus calls himself the Good Shepherd who lays his life down for his sheep (us) in John 10:11.

I hid 15 cotton balls in our dining room/school room and the boys were "shepherds" searching for their sheep. They found that some sheep like to get into some pretty tight places. :)

Names of Jesus - Day 1

For Advent this year, we are reading Jotham's Journey as a family.

For our unit study leading up to Christmas, we are studying the names of Jesus using this website and our recent copy of The Old Schoolhouse magazine.

http://www.easyfunschool.com/article1679.html

I would like to post each day what name we study - but might not get to it every day. I will get them all on here eventually.

Day 1

Alpha and Omega
Copy Rev. 22:13
Talk about the 2 Greek letters - alpha and omega and talk about how circles are never-ending - just like Jesus has always been and always will be.

Geography Fair

Our annual co-0p Geography Fair was the last of October.  Alex chose Vietnam this year because his grandparents visited there earlier this year.  Also, his grandpa served during the Vietnam War in Vietnam.  He (and I) had a lot to learn about the war and we had fun doing it.  Nicolas chose New Zealand because that's a country he would like to visit one day.  It's a beautiful country and I don't think I would mind going with him when he goes.  (smile)

On the left is a Vietnamese dress, then his board (which is detailed more below), he had a power point of pictures taken by his grandparents while they were there.  We made a shrimp and dip dish from Vietnam for people to try (along with recipes for people to take home.)  We displayed a few books we had here and a couple from the library.  Below you'll see more pictures from his table.  The flag is what he had asked his grandparents to purchase for him while they were there (instead of a T-shirt or toy.)

The left side of the board is all about the Vietnam War and the War Memorial Wall in Washington, DC.  The top left of the middle section is a graph comparing the land area and population of Vietnam with Indiana.  Below that is more about water buffalo, which the Vietnamese use for farming.  To the right of that is all about Tet - the Vietnamese New Year.  Above that is about Buddha.  Buddhism is one of the main religions of Vietnam. (Catholocism is the other main religion.)  Above that is a short biography of Ho Chi Mihn - the communist leader during the war.  The right side of the board has a time line, temperatures and maps.

Alex made the bamboo farm hat.  He also displayed dong (money), chopsticks,  and the red book includes stamps.

An activity - see what you can pick up with the chopsticks.  We put dry beans, dry macaroni and uncooked rice in the bowl.

This is made with eggshells by handicapped Vietnamese people to earn money.

O-lang is similar to the game Mancala.

Tom Cong Nuam (Shrimp with sauce)

On the far left is a game (detailed below), there are several toys and books that belong to a missionary family home from New Zealand, he had displayed a couple of books about New Zealand, there is a puzzle of the flag for guests to put together, we had a bowl of kiwi fruit, Pavlova dessert (a dessert that both the Aussies and Kiwi people claim they created), a YouTube video of the New Zealand rugby team, the All Blacks, doing the Haka, a Maori war dance, a Maori kite Nicolas made and his board (detailed more below).

On his board, the left panel has a time line, a map of Captain Cook's first journey to New Zealand, and a map of New Zealand.  The middle board starting on the top left has more information about the Maori tribe - a polynesian group that first inhabited New Zealand and some words in the Maori language.  Below that is a temperature chart showing the average temperatures for each month.  We especially noted that July and August are their coldest months.  The the right of that are the logos of the professional rugby and cricket teams and pictures of their money.  Above that are pie graphs comparing the land area and population of New Zealand to Indiana.  It was interesting to note how much bigger their country is than our state, but how many more people there are in Indiana!  Above that is more information on the kiwi bird. The right panel has information on their farm products and industry.

You can see the kite better in this picture.  The Maori people believed that kites were the way to send messages to their gods.

This is our version of Pavlova.  It didn't quite turn out like it was supposed to, but it was still good.  It is topped with Kiwi fruit and Passion fruit.

The people that live in New Zealand are called Kiwis, the bird is a Kiwi bird, and the fruit is called Kiwi fruit.

New Zealanders use many slang terms- some that are also used in Great Britain (since many of the people are of British descent.)

Here are some pictures from the other countries represented:

And here's a picture in the middle of the fair with our guests:

Tuttle Orchard

Today we went to a nearby orchard. The first tour we took was the Apple Then and Now tour. We learned about the history of the orchard and what kinds of things they make with their apples. We learned how the apples are sorted and how the cider is pressed. We all got to pick 4 Red Delicious apples off the tree to take home. We also got to try a small sampling of apple cider.

Cider press

Apple waste from the cider

Then we took a hayride trip out to the pumpkin patch to choose a pie pumpkin to take home. Our next tour was about how pumpkins grow and the differences between pumpkins and gourds.

When the tours were done, we were allowed to walk through the corn maze. Then we picked some more apples from the trees to purchase and got some apple cider and caramel apples from the orchard store.

The weather was wonderful and a few of the dads (including Ryan) got to join us on this trip. We had a lot of fun and will be returning to this orchard next year!

Scout trip to Guffey Acres corn maze

Nicolas's cub scout group went to a local corn maze last night.  We went last year and the fields were VERY muddy.  This year, we didn't have to worry about mud!  The temperatures were great last night.  We were able to go through both corn mazes.  There were questions at certain check points pertaining to scouting.  The correct answer led you the right direction.

This is at one of the checkpoints.

Just about lost one of the boys, but they all made it out!

Birthday Unit

In honor of Nicolas's birthday, he completed a notebook all about him.  He worked through some of the download and go Birthday Bonanza.

This page shows the change in his weight and height from when he was born until now.

Here is a comparison of his foot when he was born to what size it is now.

Some of Nicolas's favorites (at age 9).  It will be interesting to see what favorites change as he grows up.

He also completed a timeline of his life, and copied several verses about how God has a plan for him or that God knew him before he was born.

I think he had fun completing this one.  It was a nice change from the "normal" types of unit studies.

Think! Building challenge class

Here are a few more projects Alex has been involved in from his Think! class in co-op:

How long can you make the spaghetti with paper clips and still be able to pick it up?

Build a car and see how far it can go!
