On the second day of Christmas...

...my true love gave to me, 2 turtle doves...

So, the 2 turtle doves stand for what?  I let the boys take guesses each day.  Nicolas had no guess today, but Alex thought the 2 thieves that died on the crosses beside Jesus.  Good guess!  But, not right.

The 2 turle doves stand for the 2 parts of the Bible - the Old and New Testaments.

Then we talked about how many books were in each part.

Add them up to get 66 books in all.

Proud mommy moment:  Nicolas added them together, in his head, accurately!  (He's in 1st grade.)  When asked how he added them.  He took 30 and 20 to get 50.  Then moved 1 from the 7 to the 9 to make it 10.  (60)  Then he had the 6 left (from the 7-1).  = 66  He is definitely going to have the math mind.  Alex is very good in math also, but he couldn't do that in 1st grade!

Okay, here's the book we read today:

It's about a boy who is lame and can't go out to the little fir tree, so his dad brings it in to him at Christmas.  After Christmas, his dad takes it back to the woods, replants it and repeats the process again the next Christmas.  But eventually the tree gets too big to be brought inside.  A cute story with wonderful illustrations written by Margaret Wise Brown (author the The Big Red Barn - which Alex L-O-V-E-D as a child.)
